Biography

PhotoA native of Cleveland, Ohio, Dr. D. Light is a born storyteller. Her high school yearbook from Beaumont School states, “Never silent where there is talk. Never still when she can walk. She loves to tell stories.”

PhotoAt Ursuline College majoring in Biology and Chemistry hoping to become a medical doctor, all her extracurricular actives were in drama and theater. More then once she brought down the house with her acting abilities.

However, her career path took her many places until she arrived at professional storytelling. Upon graduating from college, she spent five years as an Air Force Officer during — but not in — Vietnam including 1-1/2 years at Karamursel Air Station, Turkey.

After the service, she was a Juvenile Probation Officer in Cleveland, Ohio for a little over a year. She then went to Albuquerque, NM to pursue a Master’s in Therapeutic Recreation at the University of New Mexico.

For the next 20 years, she was a Chief of Recreation Therapy for the Veterans Administration serving at Medical Centers in Albuquerque, Northhampton, MA and Milwaukee, WI. She earned a Doctorate in Therapeutic Recreation along the way.

PhotoNow she is transferring her ability to spread joy to storytelling. For the past 12 years by combining her theater and life experiences, she has taken the storytelling world by storm. She earns rave reviews wherever she performs.

“Braveheart”She is a member of the National Storytelling Network; Illinois Storytelling; and The Florida Storytelling Association. She successfully produced S.E. Wisconsin's Tellebration from 2001 to 2006. “Storytelling With Dr. D. Light,” a cable TV show, has won two Achievement of Excellence awards.

She lives in West Milwaukee, WI with her nine rescued “kids” — Braveheart, a Shichon; Tutti, a poodle/bichon mix; Jackie, an Amazon Gray missing her upper beak; Thumper, a Quaker Parrot missing a leg; Bellissimo, a Cockatiel; Julio, a Peach-Fronted Conure missing toes; Mango, a Sun Conure with arthritis; and Pip and Squeak, two love birds.
